Each and every one of you has the power, the will and the capacity to make a difference in the world in which you live. ~ Harry Belafonte

On January 21st, I spotlighted Harry Belafonte, who surmounted the challenges of dyslexia to become one of the most successful and influential musicians of all time. [https://www.florencecallender.com/spotlighting-dyslexia…/]

The world lost an icon this Tuesday as the news broke that Harry Belafonte had passed away at the age of 96. Belafonte was a man who transcended industries and created an impressive legacy with his incredible talent, advocacy, and activism.

As a musician, actor, and activist, he was a true trailblazer in so many ways, but one of the most remarkable achievements of his life was how he overcame the trials of dyslexia and became one of the most successful and influential performers of all time.

Harry Belafonte’s ability to inspire and lead was evident throughout his career.

He broke cultural barriers by becoming one of the first African American performers to achieve success in the mainstream media. He also utilized his platform to promote social justice and equality while fearlessly advocating for civil rights, human rights, and humanitarian causes.

Perhaps his most significant accomplishment was his tireless work as a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, where he dedicated himself to improving the lives of children worldwide.

Belafonte’s legacy of grace, talent, and activism will not be forgotten soon.

His passion for civil rights made him a great leader in the African American community…

But his influence extended even further through his music. His unique style, blending elements of Caribbean, African, and American styles, captured the hearts of millions and will be remembered as a testament to his artistry and creativity.

With profound sadness, we say goodbye to this legendary figure, but his impact will remain with us. Whether through his music, his advocacy, or his activism, Harry Belafonte proved to a generation of aspiring musicians, actors, and activists that anything is possible if you’re willing to put in the work.

His legacy is now a challenge to all of us to live with a similarly unwavering commitment to equality, justice, and compassion.
