Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement. ~ W. Clement Stone

Whether your child struggles in school or not, have you wondered what factors contribute to their academic achievement?

Carla Butorac, president, and owner of The Butorac Group briefly talks about ten contributors to student achievement. Check it out! You may be surprised at what doesn’t make the list.

Teachers who believe they have the skills to promote learning have the strongest influence on their students’ achievement. This is what I believe, and it is why I was not surprised to hear this.

Neither was I shocked at where homework fell on the hierarchy of determinants of student achievement.

  1. Hi Florence,
I am not sure what some of the terms mean.
Is self-report grades the same as students marking their own work and self-assignment of grades? How does it relate to student expectations?
Is student mobility the freedom of students to move around the class room or does it refer to children who change schools frequently?

  2. The first four items definitely did not surprise me at all.. while not a teacher, I have always found that teachers who succeed most at being great teachers are those who give feedback, have good relationships with their students, and yes, believe they can be a good influence on their students.
